Glorious Southsea summer days are coming to an end. As we leave behind team evenings spent in beer gardens and prepare for the nights drawing in, we wanted to share some things you might have missed over the last few months.
Dribbble invite giveaway
Our design team love being part of the Dribbble community. This digital portfolio site encourages interaction and sharing from a diverse range of creatives from across the globe, and maintains an incredibly high level of quality as an invitation is required to join. It was therefore great to have the chance to give away five much sought after dribbble invites. We made the most of the opportunity by creating a fun animation and asked applicants to tweet us a link to their portfolio so we could select the winners.
Screaming Frog site launch
Screaming Frog are a market leader for digital marketing search tools. With an upcoming split in services and a slightly outdated website they approached us for a redesign. We simplified and streamlined their site, using an engaging colour scheme and bespoke illustrations. We also created a beautiful, interactive story page to show the history of the company, a fantastic asset that really allows them to stand out from the competition.
Presenting our Open Device Lab
You may have seen details of our newly opened UX Lab in our last studio update. We decided to make maximum use of this dedicated space and are now proud to present our Open Device Lab. Containing a selection of mobiles and tablets, any developer or designer can book a session in the ODL for free, in order to test the responsiveness of their digital projects on mobile devices.
Sunny days out in Southsea
Working in an industry that can have tight deadlines and periods that require complete focus, we know it is important to take time out to relax as a team. This summer has seen everyone get out for a delicious breakfast together and visit the local Pitch & Putt course for a slightly competitive knock around. The warm evenings meant we were able to make the most of Southsea’s beer gardens to sample some specialist brews and soak up some rays.
Coffee and cake
Aside from a serious pizza feast, there are few things that make the Si team happier than coffee and cake. The discovery of a new coffee supplier Hasbean, who post us a bag of fresh beans each week, has been timed perfectly with the return of The Great British Bake Off. Having drawn a sweepstake, a fresh batch of sweet delights is provided by the Si team member who loses their baker each week – not sure if we would impress Paul & Mary, but a slice of cake is always a treat with a fresh brew!
Si Dev Sessions begin
Too often we find we wrap up one project and are swiftly pulled into the next, with no time to reflect on the work we did and the new skills we picked up along the way. Our new Dev Sessions are designed to break this cycle and allow our developers to sit down to discuss a specific topic each month. For the first session the team considered how they could write better CSS, covering areas that included BEM, namespaces and preprocessing.
PHP South Coast 16
We are always keen to support the local design and development industry wherever possible, so when the opportunity arose to sponsor the PHP South Coast event we just had to get involved. Four of our team also decided to go along to the event to learn more about new industry technologies and hear some interesting theories on different workflow processes.
New posts for your reading pleasure
We redesigned our blog for a better user experience, so we were keen to add some new material for our visitors to enjoys. Jack has spent the last year learning lots about animation using After Effects, we used our new UX Lab to review the usability of a new pet app, Tom took a look at how we have improved the communication of designs to clients and we considered the chicken and egg conundrum of what should come first with a new site, the copy or the design?
Now it’s time to dig the big jumpers out from the back of the wardrobe, batten down the hatches against the increasingly chilly seafront air and see what a busy winter in the studio brings our way.
