This web based concept needed to track breakages in underwater data cables and to play back the movement of ships in the area to see if a ship towing anchor could have been the cause of the fault.

Our Canadian client wanted a proof of concept to get further buy-in from the board.

The Problem

We developed a timeline scroller, allowing the user to scroll back and forth over the last 24 hours to see the path of ships in the vicinity of the cable break.

The full screen experience starts with a completely interactive world map with topographic base layer showing all submarine cable paths. Over this, we layered the current location of all maritime vessels in real time using AIS data.

The Solution

This Canadian client wanted a proof of concept web app which could accurately overlay global ship movements with damage to the undersea data cables that keep the world connected.They wanted to be able to correlate any under water cable breakages with ships in the area at anchor.

The tricky part was capturing the time at which the cable experienced a fault and then replaying the movement of ships in close proximity to the fault point.We developed a timeline scroller, allowing the user to scroll back and forth over the last 24 hours to see the path of ships in the vicinity of the cable break at the time.The proof of concept was a great success and the next stage of development was approved by the board.
