A user-centric new website for an award winning ferry company.

We gave Wightlink's extensive website a complete makeover. Through careful content reviewing and in-depth user research, we created a smooth, intuitive web experience that makes it easy for customers to plan their ferry journeys and buy their tickets.With over 140 sailings operating every day, the Wightlink website gets a huge amount of traffic from passengers checking crossing times and booking tickets. The previous site was slow and lacking clear user journeys, so we worked with Wightlink to design and develop a new, fully optimised, and user-centric website.Since launching, we’ve been working closely with Wightlink to grow and expand their website by introducing innovative new features like the Best Fare Finder and the Wightlink Explorer.

To get a true understanding of Wightlink’s requirements and pain points, we held regular workshops to discuss key phases of the design and build.

We ran this alongside our extensive user-testing which allowed us to gain important insight from both staff and customers. We even held workshops onboard ferries to trial different page layouts with different groups to see which was more effective.This process gave us valuable insight into how Wightlink’s own customers use the website, and informed our UX design decisions throughout the project. From the improved site architecture to the personalisation for logged-in users to the redesigned booking widget, the site is a UX dream to use, getting users to where they want quickly and easily.

UX Research

The Wightlink website is built with a few key integrations that benefit both the user and the client.

At its core, the main integration ties the website up with Wightlink’s internal booking system. As soon as a user has completed and paid for the booking, the booking is logged in the internal booking system, so Wightlink can keep track of and manage bookings as they come in.We’ve also integrated Mapbox for any live maps used on the website, added support for live Feefo reviews, and implemented a live service status integration, creating a seamless experience sitewide for users.

Wightlink ferries connect the Hampshire coast with the Isle of Wight, helping 3.8 million people a year make their journey across the Solent. Since 1972, they've been committed to both their passengers and the planet, they're particularly proud of their eco-friendly hybrid ferry and their ongoing work to protect the environment.We’ve been working closely with Wightlink since 2017, and we continue to help them develop and grow their website to enable seamless journeys.

This web based concept needed to track breakages in underwater data cables and to play back the movement of ships in the area to see if a ship towing anchor could have been the cause of the fault.

Our Canadian client wanted a proof of concept to get further buy-in from the board.

The Problem

We developed a timeline scroller, allowing the user to scroll back and forth over the last 24 hours to see the path of ships in the vicinity of the cable break.

The full screen experience starts with a completely interactive world map with topographic base layer showing all submarine cable paths. Over this, we layered the current location of all maritime vessels in real time using AIS data.

The Solution

Data cables run across oceans worldwide, providing internet and telephone connectivity between different continents and countries. But, if these cables break, it can be difficult to track where the breakage is, making it challenging and time-consuming to repair.A Canadian client sought a proof-of-concept web app that could precisely overlay global ship movements with damage to the underwater data cables. They also needed the ability to correlate any underwater cable breakages with ships anchored in the vicinity.

The challenging aspect was capturing the exact moment the cable experienced a fault and then replaying the movement of ships in close proximity to the fault location.To overcome this, we created a timeline scroller, allowing users to scroll backward and forward over the past 24 hours to visualise the path of ships in the vicinity of the cable break at that specific time.

The proof-of-concept was a huge success, and the subsequent stage of development was promptly approved by the board. Fixing those deep sea cables became a lot easier.

Setting the foundation for a future-proofed digital presence for Harwin.

We worked closely with Harwin to tackle the key challenges they were facing with their website. They wanted to refresh their brand's online presence, make their site more secure, and deal with the technical issues that had built up over time. Through our consultative approach, we mapped out exactly what Harwin needed - a website that's easier to use, simplified backend processes, and a modern platform that would help them grow.We developed a streamlined solution that brings together <a href="https://sidigital.co/services/integrate/salesforce">Salesforce</a>, <a href="https://sidigital.co/services/integrate/asset-management-software">Bynder</a>, and Payload CMS, all working seamlessly with a Next.js frontend to give users a great experience. The results have been outstanding, with the pages now loading 90% faster, so visitors can find what they need quickly and easily.

Harwin’s website was rebuilt from the ground up, and our bespoke solution introduced advanced <a href="https://sidigital.co/services/integrate">custom integrations</a> to allow for efficient product data handling and future scalability.

The website’s architecture was key to its success. We built bespoke middleware that syncs the website with Harwin’s product data stored in Salesforce. Our custom Representational State Transfer (REST) API serves data efficiently to the website frontend, so when Harwin updates the data of any of their 4000+ products, the website frontend can display the changes almost instantly. Not only does this mean the data is accurate, we also index the data in Elastic Search for faster filtering and searching. All this has dramatically streamlined Harwin’s internal product management processes. For their customers, this means they have access to up-to-date product information delivered quickly through the website.Our integrations don’t stop with Salesforce though. We’ve also worked with Harwin to integrate Bynder to dynamically pull through product images, downloads, and videos, SnapMagic to display CAD images for users, and TrustedParts to allow users to check stock availability and pricing at third-party Harwin distributors.
